FIFTEEN
I don’t know why I was nervous.
I mean, it wasn’t as if Max and I hadn’t been out together before, and yet I had tremors. My armpits were sweating and I couldn’t get my mind right to save my life. I guess because things were officially different with us. There were no more games, no more avoiding the truth. Max and I were in a relationship.
Every time I thought about a man that gorgeous being all mine, I got goosebumps. Trust me, I’ve had relationships before but never anything quite that fine… and I do mean fine. Every time I thought about Max, which was practically all damn day, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I truly was Maximilian’s girl.
On Saturday, I spent most of the morning pampering myself, nails, hair, and bikini wax. I wanted to make sure when he saw me there was no doubt in his mind who he was dealing with — a one in a million kinda gal.
Christina and I headed to the West County mall and spent three hours scanning the racks until I found the perfect little black dress. Afterwards we were both starving and headed to the food court. Of course, Christina keeps antibacterial wipes in her purse and had to sanitize our table before she sat down. That girl was always good for laughs.
“Claudia, you’re glowing?”
I arched an eyebrow. “Glowing?”
“Yes. Your face is shining and you look so happy.” Christina was sipping her drink, being way too observant. I watched the way she was staring at me like she was trying to figure me out. “So is Max responsible for that glow?”
I took a bite of my grilled chicken sandwich and dropped my eyes so she couldn’t read what I was feeling, or see the big smirk that was dying to curl my lips. “I’m looking forward to this evening,” I replied and shrugged.
“Uh-uh, it’s more to it than that.” Christina was pointing all in my face as if she had just caught me with my skirt up. “You’re falling in love and don’t want to admit it.”
I rolled my eyes because there was no way in hell I was allowing that thought to even infiltrate my mind. I had fallen in love too often with the wrong men for the wrong reasons and I refused to even let the word come into existence until I knew for sure where the relationship was going, and that the emotion was for real this time.
“I’m not like you,” I retorted and quickly stuffed a fry into my mouth.
“Since when?” she said and had the nerve to have attitude. “We are more alike than you care to admit. And last I checked that was a good thing.” She laughed and stabbed a fry with a fork. “You’re crazy about Max.” It wasn’t a question; it was a statement. “Is that so wrong?”
“No.” To be totally honest it felt amazing and that’s what scared me. Now that Max and I
